Shift Tags

Shift Tags are labels that provide additional context for shifts, such as “Float” or “On Call.” There are two types:

  • Organization Tags - available across all units

  • Unit Tags - specific to a single unit

Organization Tags

Organization Tags are set up by your admin and can be used across all units. They appear alongside Unit Tags when applying tags to a shift.

Unit Tags

Unit Tags are specific to a unit and managed by that unit’s managers in Works. They let you tailor labels to your unit without affecting others.

Tag names must be unique within a unit and can’t match any Organization Tag (and vice versa). The same tag name can be used in different units. If a name is already in use, you’ll see an error when saving.

Adding a Unit Tag

To create a new Unit Tag:

  1. Go to Admin > Locations, select your unit, and click the Shift Tags tab.

  2. Click + Shift Tag.

  3. Enter a Name (required, 30 characters max) and an optional Description (120 characters max).

  4. Click Save.

Editing a Unit Tag

  1. From the Shift Tags tab, click the actions menu (⋮) next to the tag.

  2. Select Edit, update the name or description, and click Save.

Archiving a Unit Tag

  1. From the Shift Tags tab, click the actions menu (⋮) next to the tag.

  2. Select Archive and confirm.

Archived tags can’t be applied to new shifts and are hidden from existing shifts. They remain visible in the table with an Archived status. If you unarchive a tag, it will appear on the same shifts it was previously applied to.

Unarchiving a Unit Tag

  1. From the Shift Tags tab, click the actions menu (⋮) next to the tag.

  2. Select Unarchive. The tag becomes active again.

Applying Tags to a Shift

When creating or editing a shift, select tags from the Tags field. Organization and Unit Tags are grouped separately so you can quickly find what you need.

How Workers See Tags

Tags appear on shift cards and in the shift detail view.

Workers can also filter open shifts by tag to find the most relevant shifts. They’ll only see tags for units they’re assigned to, along with any Organization Tags.
